George Orwell arrived in Barcelona at the tail end of , just months into the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. At the start of the tumultuous events of July , which plunged the country into civil war, farm and factory had been spontaneously commandeered by armed and organized workers across vast swaths of Spain. Abortion was legalized and women enjoyed a newfound liberation from the shackles of traditional marriage. Having dropped into the heart of revolutionary Spain in the region of Catalonia, Orwell went on to record his experiences in Homage to Catalonia , his first-hand account of a war and revolution. Practically every building of any size had been seized by the workers and was draped with red flags or with the red and black flag of the Anarchists … Every shop and cafe had an inscription saying that it had been collectivized; even the bootblacks had been collectivized and their boxes painted red and black … There were no private motor-cars, they had all been commandeered, and the trams and taxis and much of the other transport were painted red and black. The revolutionary posters were everywhere, flaming from the walls in clean reds and blues….

Within three days, the rebels captured Morocco, much of northern Spain, and several key cities in the south. The Republicans and the Nationalists, as the rebels were called, then proceeded to secure their respective territories by executing thousands of suspected political opponents. Meanwhile, Franco flew to Morocco and prepared to bring the Army of Africa over to the mainland. In , Spanish King Alfonso XIII authorized elections to decide the government of Spain, and voters overwhelmingly chose to abolish the monarchy in favor of a liberal republic.
Alfonso went into exile, and the Second Republic, initially dominated by middle-class liberals and moderate socialists, was proclaimed. During the first two years of the Republic, organized labor and leftist radicals forced widespread liberal reforms, and the independence-minded region of Catalonia and the Basque provinces achieved virtual autonomy. The landed aristocracy, the church and a large military clique opposed the Republic, and in November conservative forces regained control of the government in elections.
In response, socialists launched a revolution in the mining districts of Asturias, and Catalan nationalists rebelled in Barcelona. General Franco crushed the so-called October Revolution on behalf of the conservative government, and in he was appointed army chief of staff.
A group of powerful generals in the Armed Forces have issued a pronunciamento, denouncing the current government of Spain! They have launched a right-wing coup with the support of conservative monarchists and the clergy. A significant portion of the military has sided with these Nationalists, but so far they have failed to capture any of Spain’s major cities with the exception of Sevilla. Eventually he found work in Tooting and through his work colleagues Johnny became involved in local politics, joining the Labour League Of Youth, the youth organisation of the Labour Party.
In July Franco launched his failed coup against the democratically elected Republican government of Spain. The Spanish Civil War ensued, and in September Johnny volunteered to join the International Brigades, one of 35, recruits from all over the world who went to fight fascism.

Payne gives attention to the multiple meanings and interpretations of war and examines why the conflict provoked such strong reactions at the time, and long after. The book also explains the military history of the war and its place in the history of military development, the non-intervention policy of the democracies and the role of German, Italian and Soviet intervention, concluding with an analysis of the place of the war in European affairs, in the context of twentieth-century revolutionary civil wars.

Spanish Civil War , —39 , military revolt against the Republican government of Spain , supported by conservative elements within the country. The Republicans received aid from the Soviet Union as well as from the International Brigades , composed of volunteers from Europe and the United States.
Spain spent much of the s under the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera , and the economic hardships caused by the Great Depression intensified polarization within the Spanish public. Labor unrest was widespread in the early s, and the election of February 16, , brought to power a leftist Popular Front government. Fascist and extreme-right forces responded in July with an army mutiny and coup attempt that expanded into a civil war.

During the s the Trades Union Congress produced literally thousands of files on a wide range of subjects. The TUC was not just interested in the day-to-day work of its affiliated unions, it looked into most topics that could affect the lives of working men and women in Britain. The organisation’s strong international links, through trade unions and socialist organisations in other countries, gave it a network of informants on conditions elsewhere in the world.
The subsequent crushing of the Socialist-led revolution resulted in a period of CEDA supremacy. About forty thousand left-wing militants languished in prisons,.
Francisco Franco was a career soldier who rose through the ranks until the mids. When the social and economic structure of Spain began to crumble, Franco joined the growing right-leaning rebel movement. He soon led an uprising against the leftist Republican government and took control of Spain following the Spanish Civil War. He then presided over a brutal military dictatorship in which tens of thousands were executed or imprisoned during the earlier years of his regime. Franco was born on December 4, , in Ferrol, Spain, a northwestern port city with a long history of shipbuilding.
The men in his family had served in the navy for generations, and the young Franco expected to follow in their footsteps. However, the economic and territorial aftermath of the Spanish-American War led to a reduction in the navy, and after completing his primary education at a Catholic school, Franco was forced to enlist at the Infantry Academy at Toledo instead. He graduated three years later with below-average marks.
Stationed there from to , Franco distinguished himself with his fearlessness, professionalism and ruthlessness, and was frequently promoted. By , he had been named second in command of the Spanish Foreign Legion, and three years later took full command.

The United States Navy, much like the nation itself, was in a state of transition in Traditionally the navy embraced a defensive strategy with an emphasis on commerce raiding. In contrast, the navy was asked during the Spanish-American War to gain control of the waters around the Philippine Islands and the Caribbean Sea. After twenty years of rapid decline into obsolescence following the American Civil War, the navy was in the process of re-equipping itself with steel warships of modern design.
The implications of these changes for the conduct of war at sea were not lost on America’s naval leadership, who had spent the years and months prior to the war with Spain preparing for conflict with a European power.
The liberal movement in Spain had achieved little in opposing conservative forces in the 19th century, although they remained a political force and supported the.
The Spanish civil war July —April was a brutal fratricidal struggle. Representing the clash between diametrically opposed views of Spain, it was a battle to settle crucial issues that had divided Spaniards for generations: agrarian reform , recognition of the identity of the historical regions Catalonia, the Basque Country , and the roles of the Catholic Church and the armed forces in a modern state. Spain’s tragedy, however, cannot be separated from the wider European picture.
The London Times noted in September that the “Spanish Cockpit” was the distorting mirror in which Europe could see a reflection of its own tensions. In an interwar period marked by massive political polarization, the Spanish conflict became the fiercest battle in a European civil war that had included, among other events, the consolidation of Soviet Russia, the rise of fascism, and the establishment of authoritarian dictatorships throughout central and eastern Europe.
However, Spain was exceptional. There had been other conflicts in which the occasional volunteer or adventurer had taken part, but in Spain, the high number of intellectuals and, above all, ordinary citizens prepared to do so was startling. Some two thousand foreigners joined the rebels in the belief that theirs was the cause of Christian civilization against communist barbarism.
Additionally, over thirty-five thousand volunteers fought for a republic that they regarded as the last-ditch stand against the seemingly invincible forces of fascism. The Spanish civil war is deeply rooted in that country’s history. Its religious fanaticism was borrowed from the legendary Reconquista, the almost eight-hundred-year struggle to expel the Moors from the peninsula.
The clash between state centralism and peripheral nationalisms evoked the War of Succession of the early eighteenth century when Catalan autonomy was crushed. The cruelty displayed by both sides mirrored the brutality of the nineteenth-century civil wars fought between the supporters of the absolute monarchy Carlists and the Liberals. More recently, the origins of the war can be found in the political and social polarization of the Restoration Monarchy — and the Second Republic —
